Community Dwelling Female Elders¡¯ Fall Experiences

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to explore community-dwelling female elders` fall experiences. The study was conducted by in-depth interviews with seven participants by using a qualitative exploratory approach. Seven participants were invited to study by social workers at general social welfare center, which is situated at low-income area in a metropolitan city. The participants had fall experiences that needed medical intervention during recent one year. The data was collected by interviews from August to October in 2012 and analyzed by constant comparison method. Five major categories emerged from the analysis: (1) personal perception about causes of fall occurrence (2) an impact of fall in both physical and psychosocial ways (3) resources related to treatment and recovery (4) barriers related to treatment and recovery (5) personal attitudes and behaviors to prevent fall reoccurrence. This study suggested social welfare practice and policy implications to prevent fall of community-dwelling female elders.
